1. FRONT (lenght m. 114,69, height m. 45,44) by C. Maderno (1607-1614) with the Balcony of Benedictions.
2. VESTIBULE: above the central entrance we see The Ship, a much restored mosaic by Giotto.
3.            Central door, bronze, with reliefs by Filarete (1439-1445).
4.            Holy Door.
5.            Statue of Emperor Constantine by G.L. Bernini (1670) (not always on view).
6.            Charlemagne, statue by A. Comacchini (1725). INTERIOR (area 15.160 sq. meters; lenght m. 186.36; height: vault m. 44, dome m. 119).
7.            CHAPEL OF THE PIETA; on the altar, the Pieta by Michelangelo (1500).
8.            Monuments to Christine of Sweden by Giuseppe Fabris (1836), placed above the door to the Chapel of Crucifixion, by G.L. Bernini.
9.            CHAPEL OF ST. SEBASTIAN. On the altar is a mosaic from the painting by Domemchino. Under the altar, sepulchre of the blessed Innocent XI; on the right monument to Pius XI (Batti) by F. Magni; on the left monument to Pius XII (Pacelli) by E. Messina.
10.          Monument to Innocent XII (Pignatelli), by F. Valle, based on a drawing by Ferdinando Fuga. Opposite: monument to Countess Matilde, by G.L. Bernini and his school.

11.          CHAPEL OF THE HOLY SACRAMENT: the gate was designed by Francesco Borromini. The Cihorio is by Bernini and the painting of the Trinity is by Pietro da Cortona.
12.          Monument to Gregory XIII (Boncompagni) by C. Rusconi. Opposite is the monument to Greg¬ory XIV (Sfondrati).

13.          GREGORIAN CHAPEL by Michelangelo, who was unable to complete it. On the altar Madonna del Soccorso (XI cent.); on the right monument to Gregory XVI (Cappellari) by L. Amici.
14.          ALTAR OF ST. GIROLAMO, with a mosaic from a painting by Domenichino.
15.          Monument to Benedict XIV by Gaspare Sibilia. The Statue of the Pope is by P. Bracci.
16.          ST. BASIL'S ALTAR, with a mosaic from a painting by P. Subleyras.
17.          ALTAR OF THE SAINTS PROCESSO AND MARTINIANO with a mosaic from a painting by Val-etin; on the right altar of St. Wenceslas with a mosaic from a painting by F. Caroselli; on the left altar of St. Erasmus, with a mosaic from a painting by N. Poussin.
18.          Monument to Clement XIII (Rezzonico), by Antonio Canova (1784-1792); opposite is the altar of the Boat, with a mosaic from a painting by Lanfranco
19. ST. MICHAEL'S ALTAR, with a mosaic from a painting by G. Reni.
20.          ST. PETRONILLA'S ALTAR, with a mosaic from a painting by Guercino.
21.          Monument to Clement X (Altieri), based on a design by Mattia de Rossi, nearly opposite, in the floor, sepulchre of Sisto IV, and Julius II (both della Rovere); opposite is the altar of Tabitha's Resurrection with a mosaic from a painting by P. Costanzi.
22.          Monument to Urban VIII (Barberini) by G.L. Bernini.
23.          CATTEDRA OF ST. PETER'S, by G.L. Bernini.
24.          Monument to Paul III (Farnese), by Guglielmo della Porta.
25.          Monument to Alexander VIII (Ottoboni), by various artists, based on a plan by Arrigo di S. Martino (1725); opposite is the altar of the Recov¬ery of the paralytic, with a mosaic from a painting by F. Mancini.
26.          CHAPEL OF THE COLUMN: on the right, altar and tomb of St. Leo the Great; over the altar is the Meeting of Attila with Pope Leo the Great, sculptured by Alessandro Algardi (1646-1650). On the opposite altar, the ancient Image of the Virgin. Under the altar the bodies of Leo II, Leo III and Leo IV. In the centre lies Leo XII (della Genga).
27.          Monument to Alexander VII (Chigi), by G.L. Bernini (1672-78).
28.          Altar of the Holy Heart, with a mosaic from designs by C. Muccioli.
29.          St. Joseph's altar, with a mosaic by A. Funi; on the right the altar of St. Thomas the Disbeliever, with a mosaic by V. Camuccini; on the left the altar of St. Peter's Crucifixion, with a mosaic from a painting by Guido Reni.
30.          Monument to Pius VIII (Castiglioni), by P. Tene-rani (below it is the entrance to the Sacristy).
31.          ALTAR CALLED «OF THE LIE» (i.e. of the punishment of Ananias and Safira), with a mosaic from a painting by Pomarancio.
32.          ALTAR OF TRANSFIGURATION, with a mosaic from the celebrated painting by Raffaello.
33.          CLEMENTINE CHAPEL, by Giacomo della Porta. On the altar of St. Gregory the Great, is a mosaic from a painting by Andrea Sacchi. Under the altar, the body of St. Gregory the Great. On the left, monument to Pius VII (Chiaramonti) by A. Thorwaldsen.
34.          Monument to Leo XI (Medici), by Alessandro Algardi (1645-1650). Opposite, monument to the blessed Innocent XI (Odescalchi) by P.S. Monnot (1658-1733).
35.          CHAPEL OF THE CHOIR. In the vault, events in the two Testaments, stuccoes attributed to G. Battista Ricci, on a design by Giacomo della Porta. In the floor, inscription of Clement XI (Albani), buried there; on the altar the Immacu¬late Conception, a mosaic from a painting by P. Bianchi.
36.          Monument to St. Pius X (Sarto) by P.E. Astorri and Florestano di Fausto (1923). Oppositemona-ment to Innocent VIII (Cibo), by A. Pollaiolo (1498).
37.          CHAPEL OF THE PRESENTATION: under the altar, sepulchre of St. Pius X, on the right monu¬ment to John XXIII (Roncalli) by E. Greco; on the left monument to Benedict XV (della Chiesa), by P. Canonica (1928).
